ArcGIS 10.1 crashing at "Generating ArcID Module"

$

Hello all,

IT recently installed version 10.1 on my machine. When opening existing maps it crashes at the display screen after displaying "generating ArcID module". After this crash, I have to delete Normal.mxt and restart my computer to be able to open even a blank map document. I saw several posts where this was happening to people with older versions of ArcMap (9.3 and such), but I couldn't find any recent mention. Any ideas what went wrong with installation? I installed 10.1 at my previous job and opened countless old maps and never ran into this problem once.

Thanks!!!

Toolbar not appearing

Hi,

I am having a problem with a toolbar not appearing on some PC's that are trying to access it.

I have tried to show the toolbar by doing the following:

1. It doesn't appear in the list of toolbars under the 'Customise / Toolbars' menu.

2. Clicking on the 'Customise...' option within the 'Customise / Toolbars' option, in the window that opens with the toolbars it is not listed.

3. Clicking 'Add from file' in the window described in 2. above and navigating to the required .tlb file and adding it this way. The toolbar still does not appear.

This problem only seems to occur on certain PC's, on others it is fine.

Could anyone please help to let me know why this happens and if there is anything I could do to resolve it?

Thanks
Simon

Option to Customize Basemap Gallery

Is there an option anywhere (config file, registry, Advanced ArcMap Settings etc) to add our own cached ArcGIS Server base maps? I know we can always use the Add Data... option, but I'm looking for a way to customize the "Add Basemap" dialog. Is this possible, or is this an "ArcGIS Idea"?

Problem with arcGIS administrator and licence switch

I have a local Basic (ArcView) key and I can have access to an advanced (ArcInfo) throught a remote license server. My problem is that ArcGIS Administrator don't save my license switch... I expain: I open ArcGIS adminstrator where the advanced license is check. The licence isn't checked in borrow/return section (so, I didn't locked it). I change the licence to "Basic (ArcView) Single Use". Press Apply and OK. If I open ArcGIS adminstrator again the license is back to "Advanced (ArcInfo) Concurrent Use". The technical service of my office came to verify my connection to the license server, to verify if I have a licence key in my computer. He also had reinstall completely ArcGIS and nothing have changed.

If somebody have an idea about where this problem come from it would be appreciate... My colleagues need the advanced key.

I've managed to get ArcMap 10.1 trial installed and working, but I want to use Network Analyst and it says that this is not authorized. However, License Manager says that all extensions are authorized. See screenshots.

FLEXLM_TIMEOUT variable - unit

$

When we originally researched the use of this environment variable and decided it would solve some network connectivity/timeout issues associated with some users checking out a concurrent license, Esri recommended the variable to be set at 1,000,000, and that the unit was microseconds (= 1 second). This seemed to fix the problem; reference NIM037135 and KB Article 35659.

More recently, with the "borrowing" capability of the software at v10.0 being used more frequently and beginning to upgrade users to v10.1, we have had to revisit this variable. After a user "borrows" a license for use while disconnected from the network, the time out variable on that computer is apparently still active (at least on some laptops) and when the user tries to open ArcGIS, the laptop was often waiting about 16-2/3 minutes before the variable timed out, then the software discovered that a license had been borrowed directly to the client and it would then open. These 16-2/3 minutes equal 1,000 seconds, so we suspect the Esri reference value of 1,000,000 is actually in milliseconds, not microseconds; 1,000,000 milliseconds would equate to 1,000 seconds, or 16-2/3 minutes.

Can anyone confirm that the FLEXLM_TIMEOUT unit is actually "milliseconds", not "microseconds", or correct my understanding of the above?

Thanks,
Kirk

ArcMap 10.1 crashes immediately upon startup

I am having serious issues with ArcMap crashing immediately upon startup. It was working fine until recently.

As others have suggested before, I have tried deleting the
C:\...\My Documents\ArcGIS\
and C:\...\Application Data\ESRI\ folders,

deleting the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ESRI and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software registry folders,

and performing a clean uninstall with Revo Uninstaller.

Still, when I reinstall and run Arcmap, it immediately crashes with the error "ArcMap as stopped working". ArcCatalog is unaffected.

When I run arcmap.exe /log from the command prompt, the logfile generated is as follows:
Initializing license...done

How to Deautherise and re-autherise to transfer a desktop license

Apologies in I'm sure this has been raised before, but I've not found it.

I want to take a 10.1 license from an unused desktop and add it to my machine which had a 10.1 demo version on it which has just had the license run out.

I understand you need to Deauthorise it to remove it from the original machine, but I've not been able to find instructions of how its done.

Any instructions greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I am trying to install ArcGIS 10.1 educational edition on my laptop, but every time I try to run setup, it abruptly stops due to DEP. I have tried to add setup as a DEP-allowed program but Windows itself does not let me, telling me that it cannot be added as an execption.

License broken after swapping motherboard and processor

I have a student version of ArcGIS for Desktop which includes a one-year authorization. My computer recently had some "trouble" after a power surge blew up the power supply and motherboard. After three weeks of repair time I finally have it back, but fixing it meant swapping in a motherboard and CPU. I suspect that this has changed the Machine ID and made my license invalid. When I try to start up any Arc software I get the message "The ArcGIS for Desktop Advanced license is in need of a repair operation. Please access the ArcGIS Administrator to repair your licenses."

When I open Arc Administrator and run the "Authorize Now.." utility it says everything is already authorized. The Availability list, however, shows that all installed products are "untrusted". I also tried deathorizing the machine to hopefully reauthorize it, but when I try to deathorize it says that there are no single-use licenses to deauthorize on this machine.

Any ideas on how to repair my license?

thanks.

Printer issues ArcGIS 10.1 SP1

Hi

A few months ago, we migrated to ArcGIS 10.1 SP1, and since then we´ve been having several and (random) issues.

But I think it´s better if we go one at a time

In this case:

• Printing issues: When the user wants to plot a file, ArcGIS only detects one type of paper format, or it crashes when trying to plot, other times it just freezes for around 30 seconds to 1 minute for the software to respond, even then the user can´t print, please refer to the below image.

Attachment 25798

The printer is a Hp Designjet 7100, could this be an issue with the printer?, sometimes it only shows that type of paper. regretably it not happening on one machine, it happens randomly in the machines of the GIS users,

The computers are al running:

Windows 7 Enterprise x64
Updates being managed by WSUS.

so far, the only solution we´ve been doing for this, is recreate the user´s profile. (obviously this isnt a good workaround, since the user profile sometimes could be very large, about +100GB)

Please if you need further info, please let me know about this.

Cheers.-

Adding data via ArcCatalog

$

Please forgive my forum decorum, I'm new here, this is my first post and I'm probably not asking in the right place. I have ArcGis 9.3 which I realize is outdated but it is what my company offers. This morning my machine was upgraded to Windows 7 Enterprise and after reloading my software I find that I am unable to "Add data" to any map. I click on the Add Data button, it opens a directory with the ArcCatalog. I navigate to the C drive and I am immediately kicked out of the entire program.

I opened ArcCatalog separately, and the same thing happened when navigating to any local drive. Perhaps as a work around is there a way to save my data directly to the Catalog prior to opening the software?

Again, please forgive me if I've asked for assistance in the wrong place, I'll take general correction and redirection.

Using ArcEditor and ArcView licenses on the same computer

Hi there

Are ArcMap licenses per open instance of ArcMap or per computer machine? From today’s experience I believe it must be the former.

If it is the former, is there any way of having ArcEditor and ArcView licenses in use on the same PC? So one session might be an editor session and the other five sessions view sessions

I'm currently working on multiple maps and as a result need multiple MXDs open because ArcMap currently does not support multiple layout windows, although the idea is under consideration by ESRI.

My organisation has four ArcEditor licenses and even more ArcView licenses. In the license manager I am set up as an editor.

I found today that whenever I tried to have any more than three MXDs open at any one time, they would open and then quit out without any error message what so ever. I assume something else had ArcMap open and I was exceeding the ArcEditor license restriction. Interestingly though if I had two MXDs open and opened a third it would work but if from Windows Explorer I opened two MXDs, whilst having two already open, both would open and then quit, even though technically there was one license free.

If I could have multiple license types then I could do edits in one file with an ArcEditor license and do all the layout work for each location in question with an ArcView license. I am working in 10.0 SP4.

ArcGIS Engine upgrade from 10.0 to 10.1

As far as I can see, to upgrade standalone ArcGIS Desktop, it is:
1) uninstall 10.0 (without deregistering)
2) install 10.1
3) when prompted to upgrade license, click yes and go thru tool

Is it the same 3 steps when it is ArcGIS Engine rather than Desktop?

Also, if you can answer early... will it be the same for 10.0/10.1 to 10.2?

Spatial analyst license

I am a masters student with an advanced single use license. Last week I used the spatial analyst toolbox for a report. This week I got an error message telling me that I didn't have a license to use the spatial analyst tools. The customer support walked me through a few things but could not come up with an answer as to why the Spatial Analyst tools would not work but suggested I post a question here and see if I could get some help. I'd love to get this issue resolved quickly. any ideas?

Upgrade Education Edition to 10.1?

Is it possible to upgrade/update my ArcInfo 10.0 Education Edition to 10.1? There are several ArcUser exercises I'd like to work on, but attempting to open the data is unsuccessful, and produces an error message: "This map document was saved using a newer version of ArcGIS."

Thanks!
