The CreateEnterpriseGeodatabase tool and Oracle

The CreateEnterpriseGeodatabase tool in the ArcToolbox returns the following error:

ArcGIS 180 Day Trial

Hi everyone,

Just bought GIS Tutorial 1. Can anyone tell me the secret of installing the software? I load the disk and get the ESRI setup screen. I click on ArcGIS - setup. Windows asked me if I wanted to allow ESRI to make changes to the computer and I clicked "yes." Setup ran for an hour while the optical drive light blinked. Then a screen came up saying "preparing to install." Then a screen came up saying to the effect of "this is not a valid Windows installer package." Then the setup process ceased.

What gives? I had this EXACT SAME problem installing the software when I bought the "Getting to Know ArcGIS 10" book (on a completely different computer build). Somehow I did something to work around it but can't remember what.

This is the absolute most frustrating software to install I've ever dealt with. Is there a help phone # I can call or something?

Making ArcMap 10.1 fly

Hi
I am a masters student doing GIS and using esri products as the tools of choice. Specifically ArcMap 10.1. I would like my software to be as responsive as possible and wanted to get some advice with regards to setup of a GIS environment that would enable the most efficient workflow. I come from a Linux sysadmin background so understand that basics like:
  • Memory
  • CPU
  • I/O Speed

would be the easiest things to tune to get ArcMap to be as quick as possible. Admittedly I don't know to much about Windows 7 though...

So my questions really are:
  • As ArcMap is still 32bit would the emulation that is required in Windows 7 64bit actually make it slower than need be?
  • Could I separate out components like data/processing to a separate linux server to free up my desktop?
  • Is there any recommended settings in Windows 7 that I could tune to improve performance for ArcMap?

The Windows box on which I am running ArcMap at the moment is virtualized with 8Gb of memory, fast storage and a 1Gb network. Only 1 CPU though. I have installed the absolute minimum of software on this virtualized desktop and have stopped services that I believe is not needed. Any additional advice in getting the most out of ArcMap would be greatly appreciated.

Need to use Education Edition on new computer

Hello everyone,

I recently acquired a new computer and am looking to work on my final projects for class on it. However, I installed the ArcGIS 10 education edition on my old computer about 6 months ago. This is preventing me from activating it on my computer because it says my serial code is already used. If I uninstall it from the old computer will the code work again or am I screwed? This is even more troubling because ArcGIS crashes every time I try and use anything in the Arc Toolbox on the old computer, making it impossible to do my work on there even if I wanted to or didn't feel like trying to make the new computer work. Please help!

Export text as Tabdelimited by default

Hi!
I have used 9.3.1 version for a long time and now I'm using 10.1 for two months. In old version the data table export in txt file was in TebDelimited format by default and every value was in quotes ("value"). Now, when I export data the format is Delimited( ; ) and the values are withous quotes. The problem is that I need to use this export file for other sowfware what is not understanding new format.

I know that there is shema.ini file and it is possible to write here a line "Format=TabDelimited", BUT, it is needed to be written for every file with different name. Usually when I export file I give the unique name and destination folder may be also different. So it is impossible to write every time new line for new file.

I also havent found how to put a quotes for values.

Why the format was changed? Hot to change format to TabDelimited by default?

P.S. Have tryed to change HKLM/Software/Microsoft/JET/4.0/Engines/Text/format value, but no luck, and it was already TabDelimited before.

If so, any suggestions on a way to fix this?

Setting up Eclipse for Add-in Development (ArcGIS 10.0)

I'm brand new to ArcGIS development and am in need of help getting Eclipse setup for ArcGIS. I've spent WEEKS reading the documentation and checking out forums. I think I may have a unique case because I'm not seeing anyone with the same problem. I'm stuck at the point of installing the ArcGIS plug-in for Eclipse. I get to the point of creating an ArcGIS local update site. This is where I need to type in the location %ARCGISHOME%/java/tools/eclipse_plugin/arcgis_update_site/engine. Well my arcgis_update_site folder does not have an engine folder. Does anyone know how to fix this? What is the engine folder supposed to contain? Thanks in advance.

Licensing Requirement - Help Required

I need a help on buying ArcGIS server 10 license(s) for production environment. We have two servers with below configuration

a) Server 1 - 8 core, 24GB, 64-bit OS, Windows 2008 Server R2 Enterprise
b) Server 2 - 8 core, 24GB, 64-bit OS, Windows 2008 Server R2 Enterprise
c) Server 3 - Database server - Linux OS - Oracle 10g - 64 bit with ArcSDE 10

Our plan is Server 1 as main server, where SOM and SOC will be installed and Server 2 as load balancing server (i.e only SOC will be installed).

Our application consumes 1 map service (with 80 layers) and 2 GP services ( 50 tools for various GIS operation) and 1 Geometry service. NO EDITING FUNCTIONALITY. Lot of saving in SDE database will be done with other business requirements.
Roughly 40 concurrent users at the maximum in any given point of time.

We also use some standard ArcGIS GP Tools like Aggregate Tool and others, which warrants enterprise edition of ArcGIS server

Can you please how ArcGIS server (enterprise advanced) license needs to be procured ?? . I am looking for optimized licensing for this setup. Please help us

Runtime Error 429: ActiveX component can't create object when starting ArcMap 9.3.1

We linked a new GPO to our computer OUs and started getting the error in the Title Runtime Error 429: ActiveX component can't create object. So we reverted back to our original GPO and it is working like normal. So is there a specific GPO setting that may have caused the other one to stop crashing and the better question is what should I look for? We put a lot of work into that new GPO and if at all possible we would like to use it. So we are thinking it is something related to ActiveX obviously given the error. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Also I ran a batch file which registered some dlls but that seemed to only work for the current user. If another person logged into the same machine it didn't work for them. The Windows Script also does not work. The XP Service pack is newer than that file.

Will this install work presuming you of course have a mouse? I'm not looking for the touch interface.

Not looking to do real intensive mapping, just to be able to have a portable device for working out ArcPy scripts into the wee hours.

Registry Keys document

Hi All,

Does a document exist that describes all the ESRI features that can be adjusted in the Registry Editor? For instance, I need to change X -- how do I find it, short of looking through them all? And even then, there's no guarantee I'll find it.... The Find feature could perhaps get to a general topic, but it doesn't give further explanation about what you'd actually be changing -- if I'm going to change a Registry key, I want to know EXACTLY what I'm doing!

The Advanced Settings document is helpful, but that only has a handful of settings, and only for ArcMap.

ArcGIS 10 (ArcEditor) Desktop license Authorization issue.

Experts,
We had virus attack on our ArcGIS 10 License Server( Windows machine ). So we had to format that machine without De-Authorization of the License. So after we did format of the machine we are unable to Authorize the license as it says "Maximum license is in use".
Can anybody guild be what should be the cores of action to resolve the issue?

ArcMap Crashing

Hi,

I am trying to use the linear referencing features in ArcMap 10.1. I have CSV files which I associate with the 3D routed polylines using the Make Route Event Layer tool. It creates the event layer, but when I go to properties<symbology, it crashes. It usually works the first time I set a symbology type, but the second time, it crashes. Is there something I can look at to help determine why this is happening? I have Service Pack 1 installed, I have tried repairing and reinstalling, and I have tried it on three separate computers. Please let me know if you have any advice/recommendations.

Tutorial Data - broken file

I downloaded and instaled a trial version, however have problem with tutorial data,
when I am extracting file (with extension .exe.dlm) I got message "data error in Tutorial\setup3.cab. file is broken.
when I deleted the .dlm extension and managed to run the installation wizard again got the message and the whole installation of data rolled back.

Is there any other source to get these tutorial data?

Arcdesktop 9.3.1 - ArcMap and ArcGlobe wont launch - Windows 2008 Sp2 64-bit

Hi all,

First time poster, so apologies if this has been discussed in length before.....

I have recently installed ArcGIS Desktop 9.3.1 on 2xWindows 2008 Sp2 64-bit servers (which will be Citrix application servers).

The installation went fine. However, when i try to launch ArcMap and ArcGlobe, i get the attached error.

I'm able to launch the applications if i 'run as administrator', and if i disable UAC, both of which aren't ideal.

Can anyone give me an idea of what permissions i may need to look at amending on any particular folders?

Very Slow Start with borrowed licence when connectet to a network

After updating from ArcGIS 10.0 to 10.1 i've got the following problem:

When i try to start ArcMap/ArcCatalog with a licence i borrowed, ArcMap needs about 30 minutes to start.
The Licence Server of my University provides a concurrent use licence, which is accessible from outside the university network only through a VPN-Connection.
The very slow start happens only
a) when i am connected to the internet when starting ArcMap
and in addition
b) when i am not connected to the university network (via VPN or when i am physically connected to the university network)

So ArcMap starts quickly when i
a) interrupt any internet connection, start ArcGIS and restart the internet connection again,
or
b) when i connect to the licence server via VPN, and then start ArcGIS.

Tracing the processes with a task manager, ArcMap starts and hangs then waiting for an network I/O process.
Observing the IP Connections, ArcMap seems to try to connect to the Licence Managers IP with the correct remote IP and Host (27000), but does not get any response, because it is not in the network.
It tries 4 times with different local ports (53099, 54000, 54001, 54003) within some seconds and then waits for about 30 minutes befor giving up and starting ArcMap with the borrowed licence.

I tried to add the Licence Server Name and IP to the file C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts in as described in

but without success.
Any idea how to decrease the timeout for the lookup for a remote licence server, so that ArcMap uses the borrowed offline?

I am using ArcGIS for Desktop 10.1 AP1 on a Windows 7 64bit machine.

Installation Fails with error code 0x80070648

Hi,
I'm trying to install Arc 10 but keep getting the same problem. After checking for old versions of Arc, the installer fails with error code 0x80070648. Our IT techs have had a look remotely, and first of all said that they couldn't see any reason for it, and then said that there's an old remnant of a previous installation causing problems. However, this is a brand new PC that has never had Arc installed on it at all so that seems weird. Is there anything that I can do to fix this, other than a re-imaging of the PC?

License Mangaer "Service.txt" firewall problems

I have tried to set static ports for my firewall, but when I save the "service.exe" file and open up license manager to restart it, it freezes and will not restart. I am running server 2012. Has anyone run into this?Attachment 19928

Installation fail with error code 1311

Hi,

I have tried and tried again to install ArcGIS 10.1 onto my laptop. However I get error code 1311 each time.

My university has told me that the installation should be no problem with my laptop. I have found other threads regarding this error but I thought posting the question again would do no harm.

How do I get past the error?

ArcCatalog fails to open

I installed SP1 on an ArcGIS 10.1 installation running on Windows Server 2008. The Server is also running ArcGIS Server and license manager. Since the update ArcCatalog fails to start, I get the "ArcGIS Desktop has encountered as serious application error..." everytime. ArcMap start fine though and other users can log into the machine and start ArcCatalog without problems. I've tried hunting down and deleting personalized user config files in Users/me/appdata/local/esri and in mydocuments/ArcGIS but nothing seems to help.

I've run the repair tool accessed through the OS's Programs and Features and rebooted the machine - still doesn't load.

There are no third party extensions loaded, no addin's added.

Anyone had similar issues??
